Sony PlayStation 5 prices have been increased in the United States. Welcome to the rest of the world, fellas!
In April 2025, Sony had announced a price hike for its PS5 consoles in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K. Microsoft followed suit a month later, when it increased the price of Xbox consoles worldwide. What Nintendo did, however, seemed unbelievable, it increased the original Switch's price in the U.S. and Canada in August 2025, that's eight years after the handheld launched, and almost a month after the Switch 2 was released.
Right, let's get straight to the latest details. All PS5 models are now $50 more expensive in the U.S. That's the gist of it. Here is a brief comparison of the before/after pricing.
Sony launched the PS5 in 2020, but the PS5 standard version received a hardware revision in 2021. The Standard PS5 with a disc drive used to be available for $499.99, but now it costs $549.99. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition carries a $499.99 price tag, up from $449.99. The PS5 Pro model, which debuted in 2024 for $699.99, now costs a whopping $749.99.
Note: Sony had previously increased the Digital Edition price by $50 when the Slim model was released in November 2023.
The recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 accessories have not changed. Phew! Sony says it had to make the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S., as it continues to navigate a challenging economic environment. I wonder what that refers to, wink wink!
The new PlayStation 5 prices come into effect from today, August 21, 2025. Instead of getting price cuts, the 5-year-old console is more expensive than ever. Sony says it there are no other price changes to announce for additional markets. IGN reports that the company had quietly increased the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition price in India in July. Everyone's paying premium now.
When this "challenging economic environment" cools down, the prices of the consoles will be reduced, right? As I said before, this is not a great time to be a gamer, especially a console gamer.

Earlier this year, the U.K. government had demanded Apple to add a backdoor in iOS to access user data that was stored in iCloud backups. The U.S. government now says that their neighbors across the pond have agreed to drop the demand.
The British government had secretly issued Apple a Technical Capability Notice, which would meant that Apple would have to allow authorities to access data that users had uploaded to its iCloud servers. Of course, the authorities would have to issue a legal warrant for such demands.
This worried Apple to the point that it announced it was withdrawing Advanced Data Protection (ADP) for iCloud users in the U.K. The Cupertino company's action suggested that it had no choice, but to comply with the local law. Apple challenged the demand via the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, alleging that the request was illegal.
Shortly after this drama unfolded, the U.S. director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, said that the request by the U.K. government violated American privacy and civil liberties. She also wrote a letter highlighting the risks of removing encryption, which could result in serious vulnerabilities that could be exploited by adversarial actors. The U.S. began formally investigating the demand.
It's worth noting that the U.K. government's demand not only concerned its own citizens, it could have affected people worldwide. Really, they wanted to access user data globally. Imagine the audacity to demand such a thing. No wonder the U.S. government got mad, if you catch my meaning.
Gabbard says that she worked with the U.K. authorities to ensure "Americans' private data remains private and our Constitutional rights and civil liberties are protected." The U.K. agreed to drop the mandate for a back door after talks between the two countries.
As Forbes puts it, it's still not unclear whether this means Apple will re-enable ADP for users in the U.K. I wouldn't be surprised if they come back with an alternate proposal to access user data. For now, it's a win for privacy!

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV has been announced at Gamescom 2025. For the Emperor!
This will be the fourth iteration in the popular real-time strategy series. Yes, I know it's heresy to include the previous game.
I've been a fan of the franchise since playing Dawn of War nearly 20 years ago. Do you know that the game got a remaster recently? It's called Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition, and includes all DLCs, upscaled textures, 64-bit support, higher resolutions, etc.
Dawn of War 2 took a different route than its predecessor, but was still very entertaining. Dawn of War 3, however, was such a disaster, it was almost unbelievable. How on Terra did Relic Entertainment managed to screw it up so badly after making two of the best WH 40K video games is something of a mystery to many. Ah, but here's something new. Dawn of War 4 is not made by Relic, it is being developed by KING Art, who made the Iron Harvest game, which is also an RTS.
Games Workshop has published a 2-minute video trailer on the Warhammer YouTube channel to highlight the setting of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV, it takes place on the world of Kronus (same world as Dark Crusade), and you get to play as the iconic Space Marines chapter, the Blood Ravens.
They are not the only ones you will be able to choose. Dawn of War 4 will feature four playable factions: the Space Marines, Orks, Necrons, and the Adeptus Mechanicus. Players will be able to build up their base, recruit units, similar to the first game in the franchise. The upcoming game has 70+ campaign missions, which were co-written by John French (of Ahriman fame). French also helped co-write the rulebooks for the tabletop RPGs Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader (not to be confused with Owlcat's CRPGs). Other game modes in DoW 4 include Last Stand! Skirmish, 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 multiplayer matches.
They didn't just casually kill a beloved character in the trailer, did they? The character does appear later in the video, that's interesting. The video also gives us a glimpse of the gameplay, which looks and sounds great, and the unit cards remind me of the Total War games, which is a good thing. It looks like the game will have a pop cap of 300, those cards make more sense now.
It all seems promising, but I think we need to temper our expectations, given the train wreck that was DoW 3. Hopefully, Dawn of War 4 will be a good game.
For my fellow 40K fans, Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II is expected to be releasing this year. Owlcat is working on Dark Heresy, though it doesn't have a launch date either.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV will be coming to PC in 2026, on Steam.
What are your favorite Warhammer 40,000 PC games?

Windows users who run into troubles when using the operating system may use integrated reset and recovery options to restore the system to a previous state. Microsoft had to admit this week that the most recent updates for several Windows versions broke the functionality.
The company confirmed the issue for Windows 11, version 23H2 and earlier, and for Windows 10, version 22H2. Only client versions of Windows are affected, according to Microsoft.
Windows administrators who tried to use Reset my PC, Fix problems using Windows Update, or Remote Wipe, might notice that the operation did not complete successfully.
The issue occurred on affected devices after installing the August 2025 security updates for the Windows operating system or the July 2025 preview updates.
Microsoft describes the fix in the following way:
[Fix for reset and recovery issue] This update addresses an issue introduced by the August 2025 security update (KB5063874), in which attempts to reset or recover the device might fail. This issue happens when users perform one or more of the following four processes: ???????
Note that Microsoft lists only three of the four processes on the page.
Out-of-band patch resolves the issueMicrosoft released an out-of-band update for affected versions of Windows that promises to fix the issue.
Here are the links to the patches:
Administrators may check Windows Update. It is offered as an optional update there, according to Microsoft. Another option is to download the update directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Here are the links that point to the direct downloads:
It is highly recommended to install the update immediately to fix the issue. Users who postpone the installation of the latest updates should not be affected by the issue.

Mozilla introduces quite a few changes in Firefox 142 that improve the usability. Highlights include new options for tab groups, tracking protection, and new features for extensions.
Firefox 142: the major changes and new features Tracking Protection ExceptionsTracking Protection is a privacy feature that blocks certain forms of tracking and may also improve the page loading time. However, issues on certain websites may be experienced at times when the feature is enabled.
Mozilla is introducing a new exceptions feature for Firefox's Tracking Protection to avoid "major website breakage". Note that this applies only to the strict level of Tracking Protection in Firefox.
Here is how you configure it:
Tab Groups are a recent addition to Firefox. They improve management of tabs. Starting in Firefox 142, Firefox keeps the active tab visible in a Tab Group, even if you collapse it. The tab shows the active tab as usual in the group while the other tabs of the group are hidden.
Firefox displays a number next to the active tab to indicate the number of hidden tabs.

NVIDIA has announced an important update to its app. It brings Global DLSS overrides, making it easier to manage your preferences.
Normally, you would need to go to Graphics > Program Settings, to adjust a game's DLSS setting. You had to do this for every game you wished to change the setting for. Well, this has been streamlined by the introduction of a global DLSS Override setting. This will allow you to enable DLSS Multi Frame Generation, DLSS Super Resolution, and other options from the Graphics > Global Settings.
Once you have configured the options, they will be applied to all supported games, including those that you download in the future.
The NVIDIA app overlay, which you can access using the Alt + Z hotkey, can be customized under Statistics > Statistics View > DLSS. This will allow you to use the Alt + R hotkey to view the status of the DLSS override.
NVIDIA Smooth Motion is available for GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs. This driver-based AI model is used for frame generation in games that do not support DLSS Frame Generation. It can be used with games that are running at native resolution, using DLSS Super Resolution, or with other scaling techniques.
You can enable NVIDIA Smooth Motion in games that support DirectX 11, DirectX 12 or Vulkan. To toggle it, head to the Graphics > Program settings, and scroll down the page till you see “Driver Settings”, and enable the option that is labeled "Smooth Motion".
NVIDIA's announcement says that the new features will be available later today, via a beta update along with a new driver. Users can opt into the beta from the Settings > About section. A non-beta version will be released next week. Smooth Motion was previously exclusive to RTX 50 series GPUs, before RTX 40 models were supported. It is unclear whether the feature would be available for older graphics cards such as the RTX 30 and RTX 20 series.

Over the past few days, there has been a rather controversial topic "Germany could ban ad blockers" that has caused an outrage among users. These people need to chill, the case is still undecided.
Long story short, Axel Springer sued Eyeo GmbH (owners of Adblock Plus), in a lawsuit that has dragged on for over a decade. It was complaining about lost revenue due to ads being blocked by the extension's users.
Springer lost multiple appeals based on competition law. Then the publishers turned to copyright law. It claimed that ad blockers violated copyright law by modifying a website's HTML code in order to block ads, i.e. the browser displayed the website differently. The appeal was rejected by a Hamburg court, which said that changing the way a website is displayed by a browser does not amount to modifying the code, and hence did not violate the copyright law.
The German Federal Court of Justice, Bundesgerichtshof (BGH), heard an appeal from Springer, which argued that the DOM node tree, and CSS Structure used by the website (for formatting), are forms of user expression, and that these are protected by copyright. The BGH decided that the previous ruling by the Hamburg Court, was not sufficiently substantiated. The lower court has been asked to hear the case again. (via: Heise.de)
Mozilla published an article about this drama, and its headline resulted in quite the confusion, perhaps that could have been avoided. Its article clearly states that the case has been returned to a lower court for additional fact-finding, and it may take a couple of years before a resolution is reached.
Back on topic, should one company's complaint compromise the privacy and security of millions? China banned ad-blockers in 2022, so yes it is a possibility, but I doubt such a law would be passed in a democracy, where privacy is a fundamental right.
Ad-blockers don't merely block ads, they add a layer of protection that prevents malicious scripts from loading, and they also prevent users from being tracked or fingerprinted, thus protecting their privacy. By removing an ad-blocker, you would be exposing users to serious security and privacy risks.
In the unlikely event that ad-blockers are banned in Germany, I'm not quite certain how this would work, will browser makers have to ban ad-blockers like Adblock Plus, AdGuard, uBlock Origin, etc., from their extension stores like China did? Would it be illegal for users to have such add-ons installed, even via side-loading them from a different source? What about the built-in ad filtering in browsers? I suppose advanced users could use system-wide ad blockers, or self-host a Pi-hole.
Forget AIs for a minute, the immediate threat to privacy are laws like this. They want backdoors in your phones, want you to verify your age by submitting IDs, they try to strong-arm messaging services to disable encryption. It feels like we are living in some sort of cheap fiction novel.
Thank you for being a Ghacks reader. The post Germany could ban ad blockers, but don't panic, the case hasn't even been decided appeared first on gHacks Technology News.
OpenAI has launched a new plan called ChatGPT GO. The plan costs less than $5, but is currently exclusive to users in India.
OpenAI introduced its GPT-5 model recently, free users can access it too, but ChatGPT restricts the free tier to send up to 10 messages every 5 hours, after which the AI downgrades to the mini model for the day. Free accounts have access to one GPT-5 Thinking message a day, and 5 lightweight deep research queries per month.
Other features that are available for free accounts include limited access to file uploads, data analysis, image generation, and voice mode, real-time data from the web with search, and Code edits with the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS.
The ChatGPT Go plan offers everything that is available for free users, and extended access to GPT?5, Longer memory and context, expanded messaging and uploads, expanded and faster image creation, limited deep research, Projects, tasks, custom GPTs. That's a little vague, why wouldn't the subscription page list the exact numbers?
Nick Turley, the VP & Head of ChatGPT shared the news on X, and thankfully his post included more details. ChatGPT Go offers 10x higher message limits, 10x more image generations, 10x more file uploads, and also grants 2x longer memory than what's offered in the free tier. This subscription can also be used with WhatsApp via 1-800-ChatGPT. More details are available at the official support page.
Rival services like Perplexity, Claude offer their Pro subscriptions for $20 a month. ChatGPT Plus costs Rs. 1,999 ($23), while ChatGPT Pro costs Rs. 19,900 ($228.58). Both options are quite a bit expensive, which is probably why OpenAI has come up with a more economical ChatGPT Go plan.
ChatGPT Go costs 399 Rupees per month, that's about $4.58. That's quite affordable. For context, a month's subscription of Netflix Standard costs Rs. 499 ($5.72). OpenAI now displays the plan currencies in INR (Indian Rupee), the payment gateway accepts Credit Cards, and also supports UPI (a QR-based payment system) to make it easy for users to subscribe.
Users can visit https://chatgpt.com/#pricing to subscribe to the new plan. The ChatGPT website also displays an "Upgrade to Go" banner at the top of the page that takes you to the plan comparison page.
OpenAI says it is rolling out the new plan in India first, and wants to listen to feedback before expanding to other countries. You don't get access to Sora video generation or Codex agent in ChatGPT Go. But I think that's okay, the budget-friendly plan should be enough for most users. If things go well and ChatGPT GO comes to more countries, it could help the service welcome millions of subscribers.

WhatsApp has added some new features to improve the group call experience. You can now schedule calls, and use in-call reactions.
WhatsApp is used by businesses, communities, teams, study groups, etc., so it's not surprising that the app is adding features that have existed on Zoom, Meet, and other video conferencing apps.
Call scheduling works exactly as it sounds like. To schedule a call on WhatsApp, go to the app's Calls tab and press the + button. Tap on Schedule Call. You can give your call a name, and also add a description to indicate what the topic of the call is about. Next, you have to select the time when the call will start, and when it will end. There is a toggle for "include end time", which you can turn off.
You may also choose the Call type, i.e. whether it will be a video call or a regular voice call. When you have set up your call schedule, tap on the next button at the top of the screen. This will let you choose which group or person you want to invite to the call. WhatsApp touts as a group call feature, but it is available for personal calls too.
Your scheduled call will appear as a message with the call's name, scheduled time, call type. Recipients can click on the Join Call to respond to the invite. Tap on the calendar icon to view the event details, this has an option to add it to your phone's calendar app. It also has an option to copy a link to the scheduled call. This page also lists the people who will participate in the call. If you are the link creator, you will be notified when someone joins the call. WhatsApp says all calls are end-to-end encrypted.
Group calls on WhatsApp now have an option to "raise your hand", to indicate you would like to speak. On the other hand, you can tap on emojis to react to the call without interrupting the speaker.

Take this with a grain of salt, as Microsoft has not officially confirmed the issue at this point. According to reports, which originated from the Japanese website Niche PC Gamer, the latest security update for Windows 11 is causing issues for some users.
Here are the details:
One of the first users to report the issue was the X-user Necoru_cat. The user noticed that the issue occurred while updating the game Cyberpunk 2077 after the latest security update for Windows 11 version 24H2 was installed on the system.
The drive that Cyberpunk 2077 was installed on became inaccessible as a consequence. The user noted, that writing more than 50 gigabytes of files continuously to the SDD with a usage rate of at least 60 percent caused the issue. However, the solid state drive would reappear after a restart and become recognized again. Writing large amounts of data to the drive would cause the issue again according to the user. Furthermore, as Niche PC Gamer notes, some SSDs may not become available again even after reboots.
Niche PC Gamer ran tests to find out more about the issue. According to the report, the following SSD are affected by the issue:
The following drives appear unaffected by the issue according to tests:
The X-user ran tests as well and created a list of affected and unaffected SSDs.
Here are the SSD that were found to be affected by the issue:
And here are the SSDs that were not affected:
Microsoft has not responded to the claims officially at this point. If you run a system with one of the SSDs that appear to be affected by the issue, then you may want to be very careful after installation of the update, or even postpone the installation until more details become available.

The Enhancer for YouTube add-on has been delisted from Mozilla's add-ons repository. This isn't the first time the extension has been delisted, it was removed and reinstated in 2024.
But this time, it may be gone for good. You may have read my review of the extension 6 years ago.
When I read about it on r/Firefox, I thought the delisting might have been exaggerated, because I still have Enhancer installed, and use the add-on on a daily basis, especially the volume booster option which is great for podcasts, and videos that have terrible closed captions.
But when I checked the Extensions and Themes page in my Firefox, I noticed that the links to the author's page on AMO, the add-on's home page, and rating are not displayed. Indeed, the add-on's URL no longer exists. This is Maxime RF's (the developer's) page on AMO, it appears blank.
Here's an Internet Archive link for the extension's page, the latest snapshot is from August 12, 2025. The add-on had the "Recommended by Mozilla" badge, which shows how popular it was. It had over 600,000 users. The last version of Enhancer for YouTube was 2.0.130.1, which was released on November 24, 2024. And it's the one I have installed.
A quick check on the add-on's official web page says that "Distribution stopped for Firefox, GG Mozilla! Don't ask me why, ask Mozilla...". It also says that the extension only works on Chrome and Edge, and that Firefox, Brave, Opera, etc., are unsupported. The developer's tone clearly suggests that Mozilla could be to blame for the issue.
Digging a little more, I stumbled onto this reddit post that had a screenshot with a statement from Maxime (from 5 months ago) that said version 3 of Enhancer will only be available for Firefox if Mozilla changes its review process, hinting that the procedure was a burden on developers. I checked when v3 of the add-on was released for Chrome, it seems to have been updated from version 2 to 3 sometime in December 2024 (according to the Internet Archive).
Two add-on developers, Juraj Mäsiar (Group Speed Dial), and Brawl (Reverse Image Search), chimed in on reddit, to point out that Mozilla's had recently changed the privacy policy for add-ons, more details available here. Essentially, add-ons need to display a data consent dialog, even if they don't collect any data.
But, Brawl mentioned that Reverse Image Search was hit by the policy despite the add-on not tracking users, and adding a data consent dialog. That extension was removed for almost 2 weeks, that could be very frustrating.
It is quite possible that such rejections by Mozilla's reviewers could have caused Maxime to remove Enhancer from the AMO. Mozilla once irked Raymond Hill, the creator of uBlock Origin, and the issue resulted in the developer removing uBlock Origin Lite from the AMO, and distributing it exclusively via GitHub. Things like this could be bad for both developers and users. It could even result in users switching to different browsers that support an add-on they like.
As for alternatives to Enhancer for YouTube for Firefox, there are some options that offer a similar experience, I like Improve YouTube which Martin reviewed (formerly called Improved YouTube).
Thank you for being a Ghacks reader. The post Enhancer for YouTube add-on for Firefox possibly discontinued due to problems with Mozilla's review process appeared first on gHacks Technology News.
Microsoft is changing how the Microsoft Store handles app updates, it has removed the option to disable app updates permanently. Instead, users will now be able to pause updates temporarily.
Windows allows users to disable app updates from the settings. You could toggle the option off, and it would stop updating apps automatically. The only way to update apps is to trigger a manual download. This is how it works currently.
However, with the upcoming change, Microsoft Store will kill the option to disable auto updates. It will let you choose to pause app updates for 1 week, or up to 5 weeks. After this time has passed, the apps will be updated automatically to the latest version.
I don't see the new option in my Windows 11 virtual machine, or on another computer running Windows 10. So, it's rolling out slowly.
It is not possible to change the update behavior via the Windows Registry, but you can change a Group Policy to stop app updates. Tom's Hardware reports (via Deskmodder) that the change may have been done for security reasons. Older versions of apps that contain security vulnerabilities could be exploited by hackers to attack computers. Forcibly updating an app could protect users, but this may not be the right approach.
Why not just allow developers to warn users with an in-app banner or a pop-up warning, that informs users that the current version of the app is insecure, and offer an option to update it?
There are many reasons why one may not want automatic app updates. Maybe you want to use an older version of an app because a new one is buggy, or the latest version has an interface/redesign that you don't like, or it introduced ads, or removed features, or locked formerly free options behind a paywall, or maybe an app got sold and its trash now, etc. It's a personal choice, but that's the issue here, lack of control.
Thank you for being a Ghacks reader. The post Microsoft Store won't let you disable app updates, adds option to pause updates for 5 weeks appeared first on gHacks Technology News.
